Most searches for an alternative, cost-saving energy source will start with solar energy and wind power. Both energy sources have their advantages and disadvantages and it's important to spend time examining both to find the better solution for your situation. Solar Energy vs. Wind Power




Solar can be installed almost anywhere, however depending on how much energy usage you're trying to cover, a large surface area could be required for the panels. In most cases, the system will be installed at a location that is unused, whether that is a roof or ground space.

Solar is good for areas that don’t get consistent wind gusts.


Wind turbines need to be located in an area that has adequate wind (according to the WINDExchange, an average wind speed of 14 mph is ideal) and is free of obstructions (buildings and trees). The actual wind turbine itself doesn’t require much space, but you must provide a safe space around the turbine in case it would fall down. Turbines range from 30 to 100 feet high.

Wind power is good for locations that may not receive much sun.


Wind turbines require much less space and are effective for locations that don’t receive as much sun.

Solar requires more surface area, but most systems are installed in locations that won’t be used otherwise. 





The average residential solar system is between a 5 kW and 10 kW. These solar systems will cost between $15,000 and $30,000  before the 26% tax credit.

According to the WINDExchange, a wind turbine will cost roughly $5,900 per kilowatt. A 5 kW and 10 kW turbine will cost between $29,500 and $59,000 before the 20% tax credit.


Solar tends to be less expensive and currently has bigger tax incentives.





There are no moving parts with a solar system, so very little maintenance will be needed. Any issues with the equipment are likely covered by the manufacturer’s warranty.


Wind turbines have several moving parts that need to be maintained - bolts and electric connections may need to be tightened. The blades and bearings will likely need to be replaced after 10 years. 


Solar will require little maintenance. A wind turbine will require periodic maintenance.  





Solar panels need sunlight to produce energy. Your system will produce little to no power on cloudy days and at night. At those times, electricity will be pulled from the grid or a battery source.


Predicting the wind can be difficult, but unlike the sun, the wind blows at all hours of the day.  


Both sources of energy are reliable. However, both will depend on the grid or batteries on low production days.
