What does “detach and reset” mean?
If your roofer has told you the panels need to come off, you may have heard this called a detach and reset. Roofing contractors and insurance adjusters use that phrase. Solar companies usually call it removal and reinstallation. They are the same job.
It covers four things: safely shutting down and de-energizing the system, removing the panels, racking, and roof attachments, storing the equipment while the roof work happens, then reinstalling and recommissioning the system so it produces the way it did before.
The part people underestimate is the last step. Putting panels back on a roof is a solar installation, and it needs to be done by people who do solar installations.
Roof replacement, roof repair, or moving your panels?
We handle all three, and they are not the same job.
Full roof replacement
The most common reason. Every panel comes off, the roof is redone, and the full array goes back up. You’ll still work with your own roofer on the roof itself. We coordinate timing with them so the panels are removed before work begins and reinstalled once the new roof is finished. Plan for the longest downtime here, since your system won’t produce power while the panels are off.
Roof repair
A leak, storm damage, or a section of failing shingles. Depending on your system’s design and layout, and where on the roof the repair is needed, we may be able to remove only the panels over the affected area instead of the full array. If your roofer has scoped a partial repair, share it with us and we’ll let you know whether a partial removal is possible for your system.
Relocating a system
Moving panels to a different roof face, another roof, or a ground mount. Every relocation requires a new system design, because the new location changes how much energy your system produces. It also requires new equipment, like mounting rails and wiring. Panels can’t just be lifted and set down the same way somewhere else. Moving to a ground mount or another roof also requires a new permit, and the specifics depend on your local zoning and permitting requirements.

Roof Work is Completed
We coordinate timing with your roofing contractor so the gap between our two visits stays as short as possible.Â
Panel Reinstall
Our team reinstalls your panels and equipment using new attachment hardware, then tests and recommissions the system. We do not leave until it is properly functioning.

Most manufacturer warranties assume the system is installed to spec. Panels removed and reinstalled by someone who is not a qualified solar installer can put that coverage at risk. Ask anyone you are considering how they handle it, and get the answer in writing. - Roof penetrations
