Wappingers Falls, NY – (November 3, 2013) Mayor Matt Alexander and trustees of the Village of Wappingers Falls, NY are proud to announce the completion of an 826 panel ground-mounted solar system that will completely power its state-of-the-art water treatment facility that features a 4-Log inactivation process. Construction of the array began in early September and was completed in the middle of October. The solar system is just one part of the Village of Wappingers Falls’ Innovative Sustainability Project begun several years ago with the construction of the water treatment facility located at 2784 W Main Street.
“The Village was in need of developing its well field to meet its water supply needs and control its own water supply,” said Joseph E. Paggi, Jr., a Professional Engineer and Partner at Paggi, Martin & Del Bene in nearby Poughkeepsie as well as the Village Engineer for Wappingers Falls. “We designed and implemented a state-of-the-art water treatment facility that included an automated control system, which allows a large amount of energy to be conserved, as well the treatment process with can achieve a 99.9% inactivation of viruses and other contaminants. It is the first of its kind in the state and one of only a few in the United States.”
Now free of its dependence on the water company, Wappingers Falls and its Board wanted to continue its commitment to controlling the water treatment facility’s costs through renewable energy.
“From the moment we got the water supply back into our own control, we knew we wanted to be continue that commitment all the way to how we powered the water treatment facility,” said Mayor Matt Alexander. “We decided solar was the best way to achieve that goal and began to research the installers that could work with us. We found Paradise Energy Solutions and have been very happy with the relationship.”
Mayor Alexander and the Village will host a press event on Monday, November 4 beginning at 11AM and detailing many of the projects that have been completed and/or planned for the Village. The event will include a tour of the array at
11:45AM and a “Flip the Switch” ceremony at noon. Several state and local dignitaries will be on hand including New York State Senator Terry Gipson (41stth Senate District) and New York State Assemblywoman Didi Barrett (106th District).
A significant portion of the array was funded through the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority.
The system was installed by Paradise Energy Solutions, a solar installer based in Lancaster County, PA with five branches in eight states including a branch in Himrod, NY. The Village has an agreement with Paradise Energy Solutions called a Power Purchase Agreement or PPA wherein a sister company called Sunstream Energy will own the system but will sell the power to Wappingers Falls at a significantly-reduced rate of [#]. At the end of the term, the Village will have to opportunity to purchase the system at a discounted price.
“Solar is a great investment and Sunstream Energy is capitalizing on those investments while providing savings to municipalities,” said Tim Beiler, Paradise Energy Solutions CEO and one of the four owners of Sunstream Energy. “We enjoyed working with the Village of Wappingers Falls to construct the project and are looking forward to a long term relationship!”
The system itself contains 826 290w solar panels and is guaranteed to produce a minimum of nearly 272,000 kWh annually.
“What really impressed me about PES was that they understood that our well field was a delicate site,” said Alexander. “Our board had a lot of questions and PES did the research and answered the hard questions. That integrity and thoughtfulness was what really sold me on Paradise [Energy Solutions].”
A celebratory lunch will be provided by Paradise Energy Solutions from 12:30PM until 1:30PM at the water treatment facility. Solar seminars will be given hourly by Paradise Energy Solutions’ representatives beginning at 1:30PM and tours will be given to those who wish to get a closer look at the solar array. All are invited to attend this special, informative event. Tours will run until dusk.
